Named after the inexhaustible Jean Cocteau, poet, painter, playwright and provocateur, the Cocteau duffle jacket is inspired by a life lived at the crossroads of tradition and imagination.
With its shawl collar, the jacket subtly departs from the expected, softening the classic duffle coat silhouette into something more sculptural and romantic, yet no less practical. It features wooden toggles and jute rope closures, a nod to its utilitarian origins, along with two generous front patch pockets and a discreet interior buttoned pocket for smaller items.
The result is a jacket that feels as at home in an artist’s studio as on the high street: bohemian in spirit, precise in execution.
The history of the duffle coat begins in the late 19th century, when the Royal Navy adopted it for its durability and ease of fastening: the toggles and cords proved ideal in cold and wet conditions, even with gloves. The style evolved from a coarse wool continental coat, the “duffel” fabric, named after the Belgian town where it was first woven. After World War II, surplus duffle coats became ubiquitous in postwar Britain, embraced by students, artists, and free thinkers who found solace in their utilitarian honesty and unpretentious charm.
